Abstract
This article examines Quebec's case of separatism which is a rising issue in many democracies in recent years. As the same is true for other countries, Quebec's separation and independence is particularly important in maintaining stateness of Canada. Although potentiality of independence of Quebec has declined since the referendum for independence in 1980 and 1995 was rejected, Quebec independence is a volatile issue that can be lifted at any time. The study approaches Québec's separation and independence problem from the perspective of space, unlike the previous politico-economic and socio-cultural analysis. In this article, Quebec is defined as heterotopia and Quebec's independence is analyzed in terms of hybridity and counter-space which are characteristics of heterotopia. Through hybridity, we contrasts between mainstream who wants to use it as the basis of the state maintenance and minority who try to intensify the homogeneity, while strengthening its own opening and closing system. We also look at the struggle of minority who resisted the power and knowledge of the mainstream and the paradoxical outcome that such a labor contributes to the stability of the mainstream. Through a relatively simple scheme, the future of Québec is suggested into four directions: separation, distinct society, maintaining the status quo, and heightening of conflict.
