Abstract

This article deals with the problem of space, geography and culture in Michel Foucault(1926-1984)'s early thoughts demonstrated in papers 'Hétérotopie' and 'Des autres espaces' in 1966-1967. As a result of this, it deals also some related thinkers like Immanuel Kant and David Harvey. The main themes of this article are: Firstly, Harvey's critique on Foucault's implicit hypothesis of binary opposition between the universal and the particular is not accurate in that Foucault's own way of appropriation of Kant already surpasses this kind of opposition through the notion jeux de vérité as universals. Secondly, although harvey's critique on Foucault that he'd never understood the real value of dialectical thinking in geographical thoughts is totally inappropriate, his comments on what he called Foucault's Kantian tradition has still some values to be considered seriously. In some sense, Foucault actually stayed all his life in his own Kantian way in that Foucault left the problem of space, geography and culture untouched, while according to his theorization it must have been organized in a totally new way like he did for the history with the notion of genealogy. I argue that the true reason that Foucault couldn't touch these problems is that he could never leapt over the traditional western philosophy that is Kantian which presumes that there is one and only time and that there is one and only space. The very thought that rationality and universality could vary according to space, geography and culture is strictly speaking an anti-Kantian thought. The possibility to take over the geographical factors as multiple and plural remains purely potential in foucaldian thoughts. The universal, the rational and the geographical under the general name of the universal are in fact essentially political ones.
