Abstract

The purpose of this study is to track the changes in the semantic domain of ​​femininity in Namwongosa and Yeolnyeochunhyangsujeolga, which are considered the representative versions of the story of Chunhyang. I do this by analyzing the content and the style of writing from both the writer’s and the female characters’ perspectives. This study categorizes language expressions depicting female appearance into four categories, and analyzes them. These expressions appear in conjunction with the values ​​of ‘fidelity’ and ’sensuality.’ Descriptions of appearance in these works often appear in connection with sexual meaning. In particular, in Yeolnyeochunhyangsujeolga, while many expressions describing Chunhyang’s appearance are related to what were considered the virtues of women at the time, such as fidelity and quietness, at the same time, it includes explicit sexual descriptions of her appearance. By analyzing the literary description and expressions of the two works, I found that the beauty of Chunhyang was depicted both mentally and physically, and, paradoxically, the two works pursued two seemingly contradictory values, ‘fidelity’ and ‘sensuality.’ In Yeolnyeochunhyangsujeolga in which Chunhyang is set up as a noblewoman, part of the upper class of society, Chunhyang’s quietness and self-restraint is highlighted as a virtue of women. However, paradoxically, it describes Chunhyang as a sexual object even more than in Namwongosa. While Yeolnyeochunhyangsujeolga describes Chunhyang as a woman with fidelity and quietness, it also describes her as someone with a physical appearance ideal for explicit sexual behavior. Also, these two versions show that Chunhyang's status impacts the way her appearance is described.
