Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to compare the poems 「Drinking」 and 「Plucking Chrysanthemums」. Tao Yuanming's poetry series 「Drinking」 has heavily influenced Korean literature, and served as a muse to Poet Kim Jong-Phill as well. Kim composed 「Plucking Chrysanthemums」 quoting from Tao Yuanming's famous lines from 「Drinking⋅5」- "While plucking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge, I glance at the mountains afar." As one of his most representing pieces of work, 「Plucking Chrysanthemums」 closely reflects Kim's characteristics as a poet. In Chapter Ⅱ, in order to find the characteristics of said poems, we first analyzed the backgrounds of the poems. We then compared the two works by dividing them into three categories: 「Self and World」, 「Alcohol」, and 「Nature」. As the result, we found that Tao Yuanming composed his poetry after retiring from his post, while leisurely drinking his days away. His poems consist of small lines of poetry that came to his mind in the heat of inspirational and creative moments. In comparison, Kim composed his poems for two reasons: first, because he was deeply inspired by Tao Yuanming's poems; and second, because he wished to encourage his friends who were studying for civil service examinations in the Tail Reading Room In Chapter Ⅲ, we focused on the two poets' observations on 'self and world' and 'alcohol and nature.' Kim compares himself to a stranded orchid on a mountain. In his work, he portrays himself as a beautiful yet neglected orchid trapped in a world full of people who are too blind to even recognize this rare flower for what it is. Meanwhile, Tao Yuanming describes himself to an unfading pine tree when all other greens turn to brown and wither away. This is to make a contrasting point between himself and other scholars who consume themselves in unnecessary debates and controversies. Kim divides the world by people with insight versus people without, and criticized people creating controversies. Tao Yuanming, on the other hand, pokes fun at people trying to create tension and unnecessary debate. Secondly, 'alcohol' plays a significant role to both of these poets. In case of 「Plucking Chrysanthemums」, alcohol symbolizes a medium that makes the poet forget all complicated realities of the world, making things blurry enough to bring peace and harmony to his mind and giving him an escape from the harsh reality of not being accepted into society. Alcohol also symbolizes hope for the poet to realize the truth of life and also serves as a muse to his creativeness in writing. Finally, 'nature' is portrayed as a very sacred and special place for both of the poets. To Kim, nature is a place that nourishes and trains him even if the world fails to recognize his abilities. It is a place that soothes his loneliness and a place where he will find the truth of life, and also the source of his literature. Nature has similar qualities for Tao Yuanming. To Tao, it is a place where he learns the truth of the world and life. It is also a mirror to his own world as well as a safe haven from the world where he can find great comfort.
