Abstract

This paper examines the social relationships, perception of the period, and responses of Yi Du-hun, an intellectual of the late Joseon Dynasty who lived in a turbulent era. Yi Du-hun was called the "Jumunpalhyeon(洲門八賢: the 8 wise men in Yi Jin-sang’s school)" because he studied under Yi Jin-sang and interacted with important people in the Hanju school. He financially supported or participated in proofreading for the publication of his teacher's writings, and also actively defended his teacher's scholarship when it was attacked for false thing. In other words, it can be said that Yi Du-hun played a key role in the succession and protection of Hanjuhak. Meanwhile, he carried out various activities to fulfill his role as an intellectual while witnessing the reality of Joseon being encroached upon by foreign powers and gradually losing its national sovereignty. First, in 1896, together with Gwak Jong-seok, Yoon Ju-ha, and Yi Seung-hee, he sent an official letter requesting help to the embassies of Russia, England, France, the United States, and Germany. Next, in 1905, he submitted an appeal along with Yi Seung-hee, Jang Seok-young, and others, requesting that 'traitors be punished and the Japan-Korea Treaty be annulled.' These writings were all based on Confucian political thought and revealed the injustice of foreign invasion through universal public law. Lastly, after the Japanese annexation of Korea, he tried to go into exile abroad. However, due to various circumstances, he was unable to carry out the project and passed away in 1918 at Yihoijeong in Naesan. Yi Du-hun was born during the late Joseon Dynasty at a time when the country's national sovereignty was gradually being taken over by foreign powers. He received education under Yi Jin-sang and was associated with Gwak Jong-seok, Yi Seung-hee, and Jang Seok-young. He could be regarded as an intellectual who faced the situation of a time of national ruin and acted proactively.
