Abstract

This research starts with the following question: Why was the Latin America's new left, PT(Worker’s Party of Brazil), which succeeded in taking power in 2002 presidential election, impeached in 2016 after 14 years of governing? The Rousseff's impeachment resulted from the overlapping four crises: the economic crisis caused by long-term recession; the political crisis of increasing polarization and falling confidence in the political parties; the corruption crisis put forward by Lava-Jato; the crisis of public security. Thus, the June 2013 protest, launched simply to oppose the increase of public transport fares, led to protests against the World Cup in the first half of 2014, and further, it finally extended into the impeachment protest in March 2015, which was mobilized by the right-wing press. In addition, the Brazil's political system―especially its unsystematic political party system and “presidential coalition system”―contributed to the Rousseff's impeachment. As these political factors served as the source of Brazilian political corruption, the PT government was also involved in two major political scandals, Mensalão and Lava-Jato. In particular, during the course of investigating the Lava-Jato case, Brazilian citizens strongly expressed their desire for a transparent society, anti-corruption and stable security, resulting in the victory of Bolsonaro(PSL-Liberal Socialist Party), an ex-military general, who is called Brazil's Trump.
