Abstract
This study examines the relationship between human activities and environmental changes in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, which have undergone significant transformations throughout Brazilian history. It explores the historical background and institutional frameworks that enabled the exploitation of Pau-Brasil logging and trade, sugarcane plantations during the Portuguese colonial period, and the soybean plantation industry in the contemporary Cerrado region. The study further assesses the ecological impacts of these activities on their respective biomes. To analyze the factors driving environmental changes, the study examines the theoretical background of landscape transformation and the historical context of human activities in these regions. It investigates shifts in colonial governance, the transition from barter to triangular trade, plantation agriculture, and the rise of Brazil’s modern soybean industry. Additionally, it discusses the expansion of land and economic policies after the Agricultural Revolution of the 1960s, as well as increased soybean production and exports within the framework of international trade and agricultural policies. Based on this analysis, the study evaluates the environmental impacts of Pau-Brasil logging and sugarcane cultivation on the Atlantic Forest and the effects of soybean farming on the Cerrado biome. It categorizes economic activities and ecological transformations into four analytical processes: “Changes in Occupation and Domination”, “Strategic Use of Control and Non-Control”, “Instrumental Strategy Shift”, and “Ecological Impact as a Consequence”, explaining Brazil’s forest trade, plantation agriculture, and environmental change. These processes have shaped land use, economic strategies, and ecological disruptions, leading to biodiversity loss, deforestation, and habitat fragmentation.
