Abstract

The current study surveyed community-based mental health service utilizers (N=340) to assess their needs for accommodations and supportive services in higher educational setting. Based on the gained results, the author reached the following conclusions: First, participants considered mainly themselves as decision-makers of going to or returning to college, which was in contrast with general public's perceptions of viewing persons with psychiatric disabilities as incompetents. Second, the curriculum of supported education for them should be directed towards a clear vocational goal and reflect their interests and preferences. Also, academic loads for students with psychiatric disabilities should be adjusted as lighter than for general college students. Third, whereas participants were conditionally positive about disclosing their disability, they were very willing to accept supportive services to be provided only for disability-registerers, despite being at risk of disclosing their own disability. Fourth, supported educational services should be comprehensive with building up mental health service delivery systems and financial supports as the foremost. Fifth, open-ended and indirect questioning is more effective than closed-ended and direct questioning when you attempts to evaluate service utilizers' satisfaction level with traditional psychosocial programs. Finally, study limitations and suggestions for future study were discussed.
