Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between limitations in activities of daily living(ADL) and disability acceptance among older adults with disabilities. Method: Data was obtained from the 4th wave of disability Life Panel Survey(DLPS), including 1,354 older adults with disabilities aged 60 and above. Results: Limitations in ADL were found to exert a direct negative influence on disability acceptance. Furthermore, perceived discrimination and social participation were identified as significant mediators, both individually and serially, in the relationship between limitations in activities of daily living and disability acceptance. Specially, a pathway was empirically supported, demonstrating that greater limitations in daily living lead to increased perceptions of discrimination and reduced social participation, which ultimately diminish the level of disability acceptance. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirms that perceived discriminations and social participation significantly influence disability acceptance among older adults with disabilities. Therefore, several key interventions are warranted. Firstly, it is imperative to enhance the residential environment and expand care services to support the independent living. Second, there is a need to broaden anti-discrimination campaigns and educational aimed at improving perceptions and comabting prejudice. Finally, efforts should focus on establishing an integrated welfare system, increasing support for user-participatory social engagement programs, and improving their accessibility.
