16세기 종교개혁자들의 공통적 슬로건은 “쏠라 스크립투라(Sola Scriptura)”이다. 칼빈은 계시록을 제외한 대부분의 성서를 주해함으로 구속사적인 흐름 속에서 예수 그리스도에 의한 구원론을 부각시켰다. 이런 점에서 칼빈의 연속강해설교와 그것을 뒷받침한 강해는 성서구절을 교리의 참조구절로 격하시켰던 로마가톨릭의 성서관에 대해 세차게 도전했다. 이 논문은 칼빈의 이사야서 1-39장 주해를 분석함으로 그의 “쏠라 스크립투라” 사상이 어떻게 반영되었는지 보이고자 한다. 이를 위해 들어가는 말에서는 칼빈의 『기독교 강요』에 나타난 “쏠라 스크립투라” 사상이 그의 주석에서 어떤 영향을 주었는지 살펴보았다. 둘째 장에서는 역사적 성서해석법을 통해 칼빈의 예언 분석이 모세오경에 기초한 율법과 예언 그리고 신약의 그리스도와 교회를 하나로 묶는 일관성을 보이고자 했다. 셋째 장에서는 구속사적 해석을 따르는 주석사례를 살펴보았다. 넷째 장에서는 메시아 예언이 담겨 있는 이사야 7장, 9장 그리고 11장의 주해에서 초역사적-기독론적인 해석을 따른 주석사례를 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 칼빈이 『기독교 강요』에서 제시한 “쏠라 스크립투라”사상을 문법적 맥락에 기초한 역사적 성서 주해원리로서 비중 있게 사용하였음을 확인했다. 그는 이러한 성서 해석법에 의해 율법과 예언 그리고 신약의 그리스도와 교회를 유기적으로 연결하는 역사적 관점을 세움으로 교회와 교황권의 우위를 주장하기 위해 파편적인 성서해석을 한 중세교회에 대립각을 세웠다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 논문은 이사야서에 나타난 메시아 예언에 대한 과도한 기독론적 해석을 함으로서 칼빈 자신이 견지한 그 시대의 문법적-역사적 연구의 일관성을 유지하는 데 어려움을 겪는다는 점을 밝힌다.
Abstract
Sola Scriptura is the common slogan of the protestant reformers in the sixteenth century. John Calvin emphasized soteriology of Jesus Christ in the history of Redemption by exegesis all the books in the Bible except the Book of Revelation. Calvin’s expository preachings based on the exegesis challenged vehemently the Roman Catholic Church’s view of Scripture, which regarded Bible as reference for the doctrines. The purpose of this article is to show how Calvin’s idea of Sola Scriptura is reflected in his exegesis on Isaiah 1-39 by analysing it. The first chapter examines how the idea of Sola Scriptura from Institutes of the Christian Religion influenced his exegesis. The second chapter shows that his analysis of the prophecy has consistency that connects the law of the Pentateuch, prophecies, and Christ and churches in the New Testament by historical interpretation of the Bible. The third chapter searches the examples of the exegesis that follow the Heilsgeschichte interpretation. The fourth chapter examines the exegesis on Isaiah 7, 9 and 11, which include the prophecy on messiah, based on transhistorical-christological interpretation. In conclusion, this article confirms that Calvin used the idea of Sola Scriptura in his historical interpretation, based on grammatical context presented in his work, Institutes of the Christian Religion, for his exegesis considerably. He confronted the fragmentary interpretation of the Bible of Medieval Church, which was to claim the authority of Church and the popedom by establishing historical perspective based on such interpretation method that links systematically the Law, prophecies, and Christ and churches in the New Testament. Meanwhile, this study also points the problem of his immoderate christological interpretation on the messianic prophecies in the book of Isaiah that shows inconsistency with his grammatical-historical interpretation in his time.
