아우구스티누스의 『신국론』에 나타난 사랑의 갈등

안더스 니그렌, 한나 아렌트, 베르너 진론드, 마사 누스바움과 같은 학자들은 아우구스티누스의 사랑론이 이웃에 대한 참된 사랑의 여지를 주지 않으며 오히려 이 세상의 사회정치적 문제에 무관심한 기독교인들을 양산한다고 주장한다. 그러나 본 연구는 아우구스티누스의 주저 『신국론』에 나타난 것처럼, 그의 사랑론에서는 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 서로 갈등 관계에 있지 않고 오히려 서로를 필요로 함을 보여준다. 첫째로, 아우구스티누스는 이 주제를 “예배”와 관련하여 다룬다. 참된 예배 혹은 제사는 하나님께 바치는 것이며 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑의 상징이 된다. 따라서 참된 예배는 이 두 사랑이 동시에 성취될 때 이루어진다. 둘째로, 아우구스티누스는 이 주제를 “선한 의지”와 연결해서 다룬다. 하나님을 사랑하기로 결심한 사람이 이웃을 자기 몸처럼 사랑하기로 결정할 때, 그 사람은 선한 의지를 가진 사람이 된다. 왜냐하면 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑은 선한 의지에 함께 속하기 때문이다. 셋째로, 사랑의 이중계명(마 22:37-40)은 또한 “평화”와 관련하여 다뤄진다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 만인과의 평화를 이룬다. 그러한 평화는 획득하는 길은 다른 이들을 섬기는 사랑의 길이다. 참된 평화는 섬기는 사랑이 아내, 자식, 형제자매, 이웃과 모든 사람에게 확대될 때 이뤄진다. 넷째로, 이 주제는 “정의”와 함께 나타난다. 정의란 각자의 몫을 각자에게 배분하는 것이다. 사랑이 정의롭게 이뤄지는 상황에서는, 모든 사람은 하나님께 바쳐 마땅한 사랑을 하나님께 드리게 마련이며, 이웃들에게 주어야 할 사랑을 그들에게 주기 마련이다. 다섯째로, 아우구스티누스는 이 주제를 그리스도와 연결지어 다룬다. 그리스도를 사랑하는 가운데 그리스도인은 그리스도의 사랑으로 동료 그리스도인들을 사랑한다. 아우구스티누스의 “전체 그리스도(totus Christus) 사상”에서 그리스도를 사랑함과 그리스도인을 사랑함은 나눠지지 않는다. 우리가 이웃을 사랑하면 거기에 하나님이 계시는데, 이는 하나님이 사랑이시기 때문이다. 이웃을 사랑하지 않는 자는 하나님을 사랑할 수 없으니, 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문이다. 신자들이 하나님을 사랑할 때 이웃도 사랑하기 마련인데, 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문이다. 따라서 하나님이 사랑이시라는 성경의 선언 속에서 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑은 필연적으로 동연성을 획득하게 마련이다.

Abstract

For some scholars, such as Anders Nygren, Hannah Arendt, Werner G. Jeanrond, and Martha Nussbaum, Augustine’s doctrine of love does not have room for true love for neighbors. Rather, it produces Christians who are not interested in the socio-political issues of this world. This essay, however, demonstrates that love for God and love for neighbors do not conflict but need each other in Augustine’s doctrine of love, as is shown in his major work, The City of God. First, Augustine discusses love and “worship.” True worship or sacrifice is an offering to God and is a symbol of love for God and love for neighbor. Thus, true worship is truly achieved when these two loves are fulfilled at the same time. Second, Augustine discusses love and “good will.” When a person who is determined to love God decides to love her neighbor as herself, that person is a person of good will since the love of God and the love of neighbor belong together in good will. Third, the double commandment of love (Matt. 22:37-40) is dealt with in relation to “peace.” Those who love God make peace with everyone. The way to achieve this peace is by having a love of serving others. True peace is achieved as the serving love extends to wife, children, siblings, neighbors, and everyone. Fourth, love emerges with “justice.” Justice is to distribute a due share to each one. If love is to be fulfilled justly, then everyone must give God the love that is worthy of God, and the love that is due to the neighbor must be given to the neighbor. Fifth, Augustine deals with love concerning Christ. A Christian loves Christ while loving his or her fellow Christians with the love of Christ. Conversely, those who love Christ are bound to love fellow Christians. Love for Christ and love for Christians is not divided in Augustine’s doctrine of the whole Christ (totus Christus). If Christians love their neighbors, God is there because God is love. Those who do not love their neighbors cannot love God because God is love. When believers love God, they must love their neighbors because God is love. Therefore, the love of God and the love of neighbor inevitably acquire a close correlation in the biblical declaration that God is love.
