Abstract

Tom Wright is arguing a new view of justification through his proper study sharing Sanders' covenantal nomism. He understands the first century Judaism as the background of the new view of justification. He offers his fresh points when he makes this covenantal nomism the background for understanding Pauline epistles, particularly Romans and Galatians. He argues that the phrase 'the righteousness of God' is His own quality which keeps His covenant faithfully. God's righteousness is seen in terms of covenantal faithfulness. The works of law in Romans and Galatians are the national badges which marked out Jews from their Gentiles in the Covenant of Abraham - Circumcision, Sabbat, dietary regulations. For Wright, Justification is the declaration that one is already in the people of God. Therefore, it is not concerned with soteriology but with ecclesiology. The justification consists of two categories. The first is present justification which depends on the believer's faith declaring that he is the member of the covenant. The second is future justification which depends on the whole life's performance. Wright's studies contribute toward broadening the studying horizon of Paul's epistles at some points. But the most important fault of his studies is his denial of the imputation of Christ's righteousness. We can't discover the clear statement about the original sin and universal guilt of whole human beings in his writings. But Calvin explicitly explained the righteousness of God, works of law, and the justification by faith on the basis of Romans and Galatians from the Reformational viewpoint. His arguments gives believers the assurance of salvation in their consciences. He also stresses the process of sanctification accompanying the justification. Accordingly we must preserve the right teaching of Calvin's justification while we extend the sphere of study considering the problems proponed by the NPP studies.
