Abstract
This paper compares and analyzes the views of Sang-Keun Lee, Calvin, and other theologians on 1 Pet. 3:18–20, 4:6. These texts have been debated for a long time in relation to limbus patrum, purgatorium, second probationism, and descendit ad inferna. The main points at issue and the conclusions are as follows. First, Lee interpreted pneu, mati in 3:18 as “in eternal spirituality,” and Calvin, Berkhof, Charles Hodge translated it, “by the Holy Spirit,” Ursinus viewed it as “by divinity, and Bavinck considered it as “in Christ’s soul.” Secondly, in 3:19–20, Lee commented that Christ preached the gospel of repentance, in his Spirit, to the people at the time through Noah, while Calvin asserted he preached his redemptive work to the saints of the Old Testament, who had been awaiting the news, by his Spirit after his resurrection. Gonzales’ view is the same as Calvin’s, and Lee agrees with the views of Augustinus, Berkorf, Erickson, and Grudem. Regarding the dead in 1 Pet. 4:6, Lee regarded them as “unbelievers who are spiritually dead but alive bodily,” while Calvin considered them “dead believers who accepted the gospel when they were alive.” Ursinus, Bavinck, Berkhof, Ericson, and Grudem are of the same opinion as Calvin. In conclusion, Lee and Calvin have differing views on 1 Pet. 3:1820, 4:6. However, both of them took a reformed view in that they rejected limbus patrum, purgatorium, second probationism and descendit ad inferna of Roman Church. Calvin’s view seems to be somewhat influenced by the early church fathers, and Lee deviated from the main reformed theologians’ views on the issue in 4:6. At any rate, we had better not make such a complicated text into a strict doctrine, as Ericson said. And it may be good for us to tolerate some differing views in reformed circles, as far as this issue is concerned.
