Abstract
This article aims at discovering hope from suffering God, through a critical study on Moltmann's theology of the cross. Moltmann, getting over the limits of traditional soteriology on the theology of the cross, reveals what is to God the meaning of Christ's cross. His attempt shows the followings. First of all, it is Christ’s cross as the symbol of contradiction and negation that is the only way to liberate human beings from all the pain and oppression of the world. From Christ crucified on the cross all hope and future is generated. Second, it is exemplified that God is not the metaphysical God without pathos but the God with passion. This means that the God with passion is the God with love who suffers together with and participate in his creation's pain. Third, the event of the cross leads us up to the very event of Trinitarian God as the event occurring between the Son and the Father. Accordingly there is no other way for God's suffering to be unfolded but only by Trinitarian. The Trinitarian event of the cross comes to the way of exposing God's passionate love towards the world. The fact that Christ’s suffering on the cross was God’s suffering indicates that God is who participate all suffering and pain of human beings. Fourth, the Trinitarian event of the cross is now turned into the eschatological hope. The Trinitarian cannot be separated from the event of the cross accompanied by the eschatological interpretation on faith. Further, it will be made clear that the event implies reconciliation with suffering in the midst of the love and the end of history is transformed into the whole vividness. This is because it is the very one crucified on the cross that provides freedom being able to change this world and liberation from suffering and oppression, and can open the door to the future.
