Abstract

This work has attempted to elucidate the role that human intercessory prayer has within the framework of the divine providence in the Old Testament. For this, our attention has been drawn to how the Bible, particularly the Old Testament, presents a picture of God's response to human prayer. This work has been carried out with the assumption that the biblical evidence lend more credence to the notion that God is in complete control over the detailed courses of human affairs including the future. We first have mentioned that there are two representative models relating to the conception of God's providence and prayer: general sovereignty model and specific sovereignty model. While general sovereignty models allow for much human freedom in changing direction in God's providence, specific sovereignty models limit human free will in such a way that they highlight God's determined decree. Thus, on the side of the specific sovereignty model, this work has paid attention to how human intercessory prayer in the Old Testament works with regard to God's strong control over the details of human action. Our discussions lead us into concluding that in response to human intercessory prayer, God's causal determination in his decree are varying. Human beings are privileged to play a part in changing some divine actions in a conventional relationship with God. However, in certain divine fixed plans, human intercessory prayer does not effect change, and even human free will for intercessory prayer is forbidden. This variation is due to human depravity. This conclusion entails that God's response to human prayer has its purpose in revealing that the Old Testament views the relationship between God and human beings as being personal in nature.
