마르틴 루터의 『대교리문답』 - 역사적 배경과 십계명, 사도신경 그리고 주기도문에 대한 해설에 대한 분석

초록

종교개혁 500주년을 맞이하여 마르틴 루터의 신학사상의 정수가 무엇인지를 논구하는 일은 의미있는 일이라고 생각된다. 그러나 루터는 조직신학적이기 보다는 성경신학자였고, 종교개혁과 관련된 많은 저술들을 저술했기 때문에 그의 신학 사상의 정수를 파악하는 일이 쉽지가 않다. 볼프강 카피토에게 보낸 한 편지 속에서 루터가 자신의 저술들 가운데 『노예의지론』과 『대소교리문답서』들을 주요 저술로 평가하고 있기 때문에, 본고에서는 루터의 『대교리문답』(1529)을 논구함을 통해 그의 사상의 정수를 파악하고자 시도해 보았다. 서론에 이어지는 2절에서는 『대교리문답』의 역사적 배경에 대해 살펴 보았다. 루터는 종교개혁이 10년 이상 진행되면서 자신이 속한 작센 지역에 속한 교회와 교역자들의 상황을 확인하기 위해 교회 시찰을 시행했고, 그 결과 교역자들의 무지함과 방종이 극에 달했음을 확인하게 되었다. 루터는 평신도들을 위해 짧은 형태의 『소교리문답』을 저술함과 동시에, 목회자들을 위해 자세한 해설을 담은 『대교리문답』을 간행한 것이다. 이어지는 3절에서는 『대교리문답』의 다섯 항목 중 첫 세 항목- 십계명, 사도신경, 주기도문 등에 대해 루터의 해설을 주의 깊게 살펴보면서 그의 사상의 핵심을 파악하려고 노력해 보았다. 루터는 십계명을 중시하여 자세하게 해설하는 것을 보았으며, 제1계명의 중요성을 시종일관 강조하는 것을 확인했고, 제4계명(부모공경)에 대해서도 자세하게 설명하는 것을 살펴보았다. 또한 인간의 힘만으로 십계명을 지킬 수 없기에 사도신경이 필요하고, 그러한 힘을 얻기 위하여 주기도문이 필요하다는 점을 강조하는 것을 이어서 살펴 보았다. 우리는 『대교리문답』의 세 조항 설명들 속에서 루터가 하나님의 말씀을 강조하는 것을 확인했다. 그리고 목회자들과 신자들을 향한 실천적이고 교육학적인 관심이 지대하다는 것도 확인하게 되었다. 학계에서는 루터의 『대소교리문답』은 청년 칼빈의 신학 형성에도 영향을 미쳤다고 평가되어 왔기 때문에, 이러한 논구는 의미가 있다고 판단된다. 다만 양자 간의 관계에 대한 논의는 또 하나의 학술적 논구가 필요하다고 생각된다.

Abstract

On commemorating five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation, it is meaningful to appropriate the essence of Martin Luther's thoughts. Though, there remains a difficulty. Luther was a biblical theologian rather than a systematic theologian. Accordingly, he wrote many works related to the Reformation. Therefore, it is not easy to simply determine the essence of his theological thought. Because Luther considered De servo arbitrium and Small and Large Catechism to be the most important in a letter to Wolfgang Capito. In this paper, I tried to grasp the essence of his thoughts by examining Luther's Large Catechism (1529). In the second section that follows the introduction, I have examined the historical background of the Large Catechism. As the Reformation continued for more than a decade, Luther conducted a church visit to ascertain the situation of churches and clergy in his Saxony region. Consequently, he identified the ignorance and indulgence of the pastors. Luther wrote Small Catechism in a short form for the laymen, as well as Large Catechism, in which contains detailed explanations, for the pastors. In the subsequent section, I examined the core of his thought by discerning Luther's commentary on the first three items of the Large Catechism -The Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord's Prayer. We have confirmed that Luther had commented on the Ten Commandments in detail and he had consistently emphasized the importance of the First Commandment and the fourth commandment (Honor your parents). I continue on to scrutinizing his emphasis that the Creed is necessary because man cannot keep the Ten Commandments by his power, and that the Lord's Prayer is needed to obtain such power. Thus, we may confirm that Luther emphasized the Word of God in the accounts of the three parts of Large Catechism. Moreover, we witnessed Luther had had a great deal of practical and pedagogical interest for pastors and believers. Since it is generally accepted fact in the academic world that Luther's Large and Small Catechism had been great influence in the formation of young Calvin, this paper is tangible to Reformed theologians. However, I think further research is necessary to survey the relationship between the two.
