초록
This paper investigates Paul Tillich’s understanding of the Trinity. A careful analysis of Tillich’s statements has enabled us to point out three characteristics of the Trinity. First, his theological system is trinitarianly structured, where all the parts are closely and indirectly related with each other under a dynamic unity. Second, he has a symbolic understanding of the Trinity. And the last is his understanding of dialectical Trinity, which is based on his emphasis on the dialectic of divine life. In this paper each of them can be expressed as “Structural or Methodological Trinity,” “Symbolic Trinity,” and “Dialectical Trinity.” Through this analysis and observation, this paper argues that Tillich’s understanding of the Trinity is in a tension between its symbolic and dialectical characteristics under a trinitarian structure of system. Thus his understanding of the Trinity can be considered not to be closed but to be open.
