개혁주의적 관점에서 본 조나단 에드워즈의 준비교리: 초자연적 은혜와 자연적 수단의 활용 관계

초록

페리 밀러는 “칼빈과 칼빈주의자들” 사이의 불연속성을 주장하고, 칼빈과 대립되는 청교도의 준비주의 논제를 비판했다. 회심의 준비를 강조했던 청교도들의 준비주의는 하나님의 주권적 은혜를 강조했던 칼빈의 신학과 단절되어 있다는 것이다. 하지만 칼빈에 대립되는 준비주의자 논제는 다수의 학자들에 의해 비판을 받아왔다. 청교도들은 구원에 있어서 하나님의 절대적인 주권을 강조하면서도 구원을 받는 인간의 편에서 믿음을 준비하는 일을 매우 중요한 요소로 여겼다. 청교도들은 죄로 부패한 인간은 구원 얻는 지식을 상실하여 선을 행하기에 무능한 존재가 되었지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 회심을 위해 영적 훈련을 소홀히 해서는 안되며, 어떤 단계적인 준비를 해야 한다고 주장했다. 마찬가지로, 에드워즈는 초자연적 은혜에 대한 강조 못지않게, 자연적 수단의 사용을 강조하였다. 그러면서도 은혜의 수단들을 강조하나 공로주의를 표방하지 않으며, 은혜의 수단의 사용이 초자연적 은혜와 대립하는 것도 아니며, 불신자에게 끼치는 율법의 용법이 성령의 일반 은혜의 결과임을 주장했다. 그는 성령의 특별 은총과 일반 은총, 초자연적 은혜와 자연적 수단 사이, 즉 하나님의 절대 주권과 인간의 순종 사이에 율법을 통한 인과적 원리를 제시함으로써, 율법에 대한 양극단적 견해들인 아르미니우스주의와 반율법주의의 문제를 지적하고, 목양의 측면에서 성도들을 참된 믿음으로 인도하기 위해 노력했다. 믿음의 준비에 대한 에드워즈의 관심, 회심의 초자연적 은혜와 자연적 수단의 활용에 대한 균형잡힌 관계, 그리고 반율법주의를 경계하며 제시한 인과성의 원리는 에드워즈의 준비교리가 하나님의 주권적 은혜와 율법에 대한 인간의 순종 사이의 조화를 꾀하고 있으며, 따라서 그의 신학이 칼빈과 개혁파 정통, 특별히 개혁주의 청교도의 신학 위에 서 있음을 보여준다.

Abstract

Perry Miller argued that there is a discontinuity between Calvin and Calvinists, and maintained the Calvin-versus-the Preparationists thesis which implies that the Puritans opposed an absolute sovereignty of God, describing as if sinners could prepare the salvation by their own power. For Miller, the Puritans’ preparationism is a departure from the thought of Calvin who emphasized the sovereign grace alone. Miller’s theory is refuted by several scholars, who contended that the Puritans’ preparatory view consistently reflects features of Calvin and his followers’ thoughts. Considering the issues raised by the scholars, the following article attempts to analyze the fundamental topic of Calvinistic perspective about the relationship between God’s sovereignty and human obedience of the law in conversion. Failure to clearly provide the reason of Edwards’ principle of cause and effect emphasis contra antinomianism would be a tacit admission that his view of preparationism deviates from the thought of his Puritan forebears. However, tapping into historical contexts of both the Puritans and Edwards is of important in understanding his view of the causal effect, by which he criticizes antinomianism which considered to be similar to enthusiasts who ignored the need of means of grace. Given his emphasis on the harmony between an absolute sovereignty of God and the human responsibility revealed in the preparation of faith, the nature of supernatural work of God in conversion, and the antinomian historical context, that there is a high degree of similarity between the views of the Purtians and Edwards, is beyond doubt.
