Abstract

The book of Job is ultimately a book about ‘cognition of God’. Because the characters in the book of Job are having a conversation about how they perceive God. Especially we are interested in Job. Job is a narrator who persistently asks for a conversation with a silent God. The form of this request is a lament. His laments were long enough to last ten times, and the content was to pour out his 'cognition of God'. Of course, his laments included a response to his friends' accusations and rebukes, but ultimately what he wanted to hear was God's answer. However, God's presence was delayed, and Job's lament collided with the existential recognition of God, facing the experiences of overturning notions and traditions. This conflict resulted in the expansion of perception that converted Job's existential awareness into theological awareness. When I read the book of Job as a unified work, I observed that Job's laments form a series of themes as he protests, requests, and complains to God ten times. Following these observations, as a result of deeply and in detail illuminating the characteristic aspects revealed in Job's each laments, the direction and expression of Job's laments revealed his current emotion, piety and faith, and at the same time, a dualistic letter that describes his awareness of God, and gradually undergoes a paradigm shift. Therefore, in this thesis, I paid attention to Job's cognition of God, which is described through the uniqueness of ten each laments, and expressed each literary theme as a central keyword. From the first lament (Chapter 3) to the fifth lament (Chapter 16-17), Job recognizes this series of processes as the God who causes confusion, the God who is angry, the God who bears hostility, the God who accuses, and the God who deprives. It turns out that these five laments revealed that Job existentially recognized God and descended. On the other hand, from the sixth lament (Chapter 19) to the tenth lament (Chapters 29-31), by recognizing God as the redeeming God, the righteous God, the judging God, the Almighty God, and the restoring God, Job's cognition is moved to the original nature of God. Job's cognition of God rose again theologically. This change in Job's cognition of God not only leads to the possibility that he finally drew out God's answers (Chapters 38-42), but also the possibility that Job's heart reached repentance even before God's answers.
