헤르만 바빙크의 예배론: 존재와 행위의 관계성으로 살피는 예배

Abstract

Even a faithful believer can fall into ‘formalism,’ follows habits without thinking, and finally worships meaninglessly. In particular, if one worships without closely grasping the nature and properties of worship, the probability of meaningless worship can rapidly increase. Therefore, it is very important for holy believers to grasp the essence and properties of worship in a healthy manner. In order to understand the true essence and properties of worship, this paper will closely examine the first volume of Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, written by Herman Bavinck(1854-1921), a Reformed theologian who lived in the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries. The reason is that Bavinck develops the ‘prolegomena’ in the first volume of Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, and its core contents are the principles of religion, revelation, faith, and theology, and these contents can be read meaningfully in the context of ‘worship.’ In particular, this study will examine worship in the relationship between ‘being’ and ‘action.’ This is because ‘who is worshiping’ is much more important than ‘what kind of worship is performed.’ The order of progress in this paper is as follows. Focusing on the first volume of Bavinck’s Gereformeerde Dogmatiek, a total of six themes are discussed in the context of relationship between being and action: the essence of worship, internal worship and external worship, worship and piety, worship and culture, worship and revelation, worship and rationality. Finally, the study will consider practical applications based on what are discussed, and then conclude the article by summarizing and organizing key contents.
