Abstract

This study analyzes the theory of Christian scholarship by Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck(1854-1921) from the perspective of his critique of positivism. When theology’s academic status was threatened by the rise of positivism in the late 19th century, Bavinck presented an alternative concept of scholarship through his work Christelijke wetenschap. His critique of positivism developed in four aspects-neglecting the subjectivity of human knowledge, reducing the totality of human experience, diminishing the purpose and meaning of scholarship, and improperly separating religion and science. Based on this critique, Bavinck proposed a dual concept of scholarship that recognizes both the visible and invisible worlds as objects of study, and emphasized the organic unity and independence of scholarship. He maintained that all scholarship presupposes some degree of faith, and through the concept of Logos, emphasized that various academic fields are organically connected. Bavinck’s theory of Christian scholarship overcomes the limitations of positivism and provides an integrative understanding that encompasses various aspects of human experience, offering a meaningful alternative to problems in modern scholarship such as fragmentation, the myth of objectivity, and the separation of values and facts.
