Abstract
This article aims to elucidate the intellectual background of Kevin Vanhoozer's hermeneutical theory and to explain his biblical interpretation as a 'thick description' through a comparison with redemptive-historical preaching. Firstly, it examines the intellectual foundations of Vanhoozer's biblical interpretation as a thick description, exploring John Searle's speech act theory, Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutical theory, and Clifford Geertz's cultural interpretation as a thick description. Following this, it delves into Kevin Vanhoozer's biblical interpretation as a thick description, focusing on the Bible as God's communication. It argues that interpreting this requires not a 'thin' interpretation but a 'thick' description encompassing the layers of signs, genre and history, and the canonical layer. To clearly illustrate this, it compares Vanhoozer's approach with redemptive-historical preaching, particularly through a comparison with Greidanus, examining their commonalities and differences, and provides a specific example from Ecclesiastes 1:1-11. While redemptive-historical preaching struggles to clearly recognize the distinctions between these layers, the thick description explicitly acknowledges them and, rather than a unilateral direction of redemptive history, emphasizes the functional dimension of the canon, enabling a more nuanced interpretation of the text. This offers implications for preaching, including a balanced interpretation of the text and its canonical context, the comprehensiveness of the canonical context, and a reconsideration of God's communication. Finally, it presents the limitations of the study and suggests future research directions.
