Abstract
Healing function of German literature has recently gained increasing attention. For example, this function has begun with Hesse and Kafka, and it is even expanding throughout overall German literature. This paper discussed five German literary episodes moving from psychopathological point of view “pathogenese" to mental health perspective “salutogenese”. For instance, five episodes include 1. Injured Werther, 2. Wilhelm with broken heart, 3. Painful Anton, 4. Alienated and oppressed Peter, 5. Illiterate Hanna. The psychopathological flow of these characters transforms into various images (1-1. Werther who reads Homer and obtains comfort, 2-2. Wilhelm who gains comfort by his daughter Minon’ s song, 3-3. Anton who grew up as he hoped for his childhood, 4-4. Peter who acquires consolation by mourning Boppi’s death about sense of lose about mother’s death in childhood, 5-5. Hanna who truly sympathizes with the death of Jewish girls by reading and writing) through characters’ diverse way to overcome. This study focused on the vitality of life that characters suggested. Consequently, this paper will be able to provide a useful framework to utilize German literature as therapeutic Archiv.
