Abstract
Supply chain management(SCM) is a digitally enabled interfirm process capability that has been receiving significant attention. Best practice examplars suggest that digital platforms play a critical role in managing supply chain activities and partnerships that generate performance gains for firms. However, there is limited academic investigation on how and why relational determinants and information technology can create performance gains for firms in a supply chain management context. We draw on the emerging IT-enabled organizational capabilities perspective to suggest that firms that develop IT infrastructure integration for SCM and leverage it to create significant performance gains. The result suggest that integrated IT infrastructures enable firms to develop the higher-order capability of supply chain process integration. This capability enables firms to share information with their supply chain partners. Furthermore, IT-enabled supply chain integration capability results in significant and sustained firm performance gains, especially in SCM integration and revenue. This study provides insights into real-world SCM efforts, an area where there have been relatively few empirical studies based on field data because of the dominance of analytical modeling and practitioner case study as the main approaches to the study of SCM. The organizational factors that need focus when a firm is embarking on e-business initiatives are identified. The importance of improving and sustaining higher levels of IT-infra is highlighted. An understanding of the key factors affecting SCM effectiveness will put practitioners in a better position to design appropriate strategies to deal with SCM deployment and, consequently, to enhance its benefits. The same lessons apply to IT managers faced with supporting organizational SCM programs and can guide them in adopting appropriate guidelines and managerial postures that will ensure successful SCM initiatives.
