Abstract
Despite various studies on the impersonal supervision of managers and the attitudes and behaviors of employees, there has been a relative lack of systematic research explaining the relationship between supervisors and subordinates. This study aims to determine the relationship of abusive supervision on subordinates' whistleblowing intentions. Furthermore, we will investigate how the two sub-dimensions of attributed motives, namely, performance promotion motives and injury initiation motives, have moderating relationships on the process of influencing whistleblowing intentions. For this study, a survey was conducted among employees in various industries in Vietnam, with a total of 250 respondents. The findings of the relationship between abusive supervision and whistleblowing intentions indicate that abusive supervision has a significant positive effect on both whistleblowing intentions. The results of the moderating effects of the two sub-dimensions of attributed motives reveal that performance promotion motives, no moderating effects were observed in the positive relationship between abusive supervision and whistleblowing intentions. Injury initiation motives strengthened the positive relationship between abusive supervision and whistleblowing intentions. By clarifying the relationship between abusive supervision and whistleblowing intentions, which has been a subject of confusion in previous studies, this study provides a new perspective that highlights the positive relationship between abusive supervision and whistleblowing intentions, thereby enhancing the understanding of this relationship between supervisors and subordinates. The study concludes with a discussion and implications of the findings, offering theoretical and practical insights.
