Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the current trend of inbound tourism in India. In addition, we find the factors that affect the tourism demand in India. The annual growth rate of Foreign Tourists Arrivals(FTAs) in India grows more than 10%. The percentage share in tourist arrivals in India from Europe and U.S.A. is higher than that from other countries. Since most of tourists arrived from October to September, seasonal conditions are the important factor of FTAs in India. More than 90% of FTAs is arrived by air. The major airport of entry are Delhi and Mumbai. Male tourists are more than female tourists. In terms of the age group, most of FTAs in India are from 35-55 age group. Visiting ‘Relatives and Friends’ and ‘Leisure and Holiday’ are the main reason to visits in India. However koreans visit india mainly for ‘Business’ purpose. This paper shows that the national income and the distance are statistically significant to the arrivals. The nominal exchange rate is statistically insignificant. The relative price is statistically significant but the sign has positive. The high price level in India seems to be accounted for the discrepancy of the sign. With collecting more time series data set, it will be possible to employ the various empirical analysis.
