Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Generative AI is increasingly used in architectural visualization, but biased training data often lead to mixed or distorted representations of East Asian architecture. Hanok, with its distinctive giwa roof, timber structure, and proportion, is particularly vulnerable to cultural interference in text-to-image generation. This study therefore aims to empirically evaluate how accurately a FLUX-based LoRA model, specialized for hanok remodeling facades and coupled with a CLIP-based evaluation scheme, can reproduce architectural fidelity and cultural identity in hanok exterior images. (Method) A total of 100 contemporary Hanok remodeling facade images were collected, preprocessed, and used to construct a LoRA-fine-tuned FLUX model with a unified trigger token“Hanstyle01”. Subsequently, a structured workflow was implemented in ComfyUI, incorporating ControlNet (Canny/Depth) to maintain consistent shape conditions while varying material and program attributes. Using ten predefined prompt cases (R01–R05 for residential, C01–C05 for commercial), the model generated 1,000 facade images. These outputs were evaluated using the CLIP Vision model across six quantitative criteria reflecting both architectural and cultural characteristics. Architectural fidelity was assessed through: [A] Giwa roof accuracy, verifying the correctness of roof curvature and tile rhythm; [B] material expression, evaluating clarity of texture boundaries in wood, brick, plaster, and concrete; and [C] functional readability, determining whether residential and commercial spatial cues were visually distinguishable. Cultural identity was examined by measuring [K] Korean style alignment and the unintended presence of [C] Chinese and [J] Japanese stylistic elements particularly roof typologies and façade motifs. (Results) Overall CLIP scores exceeded 30, indicating stable text–image alignment. Giwa roof expression showed the highest score [A: 33.4], demonstrating that traditional eave curvature and tile rhythm were reliably reproduced. Korean style alignment [K: 33.2] was also high, suggesting consistent learning of hanok-specific proportions, material contrasts, and facade composition. In contrast, material fidelity [B: 25.6] was relatively low, and several cases exhibited ambiguous boundaries and textures in plaster, timber, and metal finishes. Scores for Japanese and Chinese style interference [J, C] were lower than [K], indicating that cultural mixing was largely suppressed and that hanok-specific identity was comparatively well preserved. (Conclusions) The proposed FLUX+LoRA+ControlNet workflow and CLIP-based six-item evaluation framework demonstrate that generative AI can reproduce hanok remodeling facades with reasonable fidelity in roof form, proportion, and functional differentiation, while still showing limitations in material texture and boundary expression. The findings suggest that LoRA-based fine-tuning can partially mitigate cultural mixing between East Asian styles. Overall, the evaluation framework and experimental results provide a practical assessment standard for discussing how generative AI reproduces traditional architecture, and can serve as a reference baseline for future AI-based visualization and design research on hanok and related heritage environments.
