Abstract

A Korean traditional cloth, Sambe is made of hemp’s bast fiber as its main ingredient. Being appointed as a national intangible heritage, Sambe has been recognized as an important cultural heritage. Historically, every Sambe holds its unique regional character that produces one. The Sambe production of today holds various questions including the preservation of traditional techniques. The production rate of traditional Sambe has decreased due to the development of synthetic fiber and importing cheap foreign products. This decline affects negatively to the succession of traditional Sambe technique and the local economy. Chimok Sambe village is one of the traditional Sambe production regions being designated as an intangible heritage by Jeonbuk State. The village continues Sambe weaving by preserving and transmitting the techniques. All the process of traditional Sambe production is heavily dependent on handwork, has many difficult steps for making thread, requires high level technique for making warps and tying. Both traditional and improved looms are used for the production. This Chimok Sambe village is an important example for the question of inherit and preservation of traditional techniques because it considers not only technique acquisition and making it skillful but also Sambe’s productivity and economic feasibility. Many studies and projects seek the ways of modernization of traditional technique and its sustainability, however, it stays in the initial stage as yet. In conclusion, the importance of traditional technique for Sambe production has been highlighted thanks to the unique hemp bast fiber and handwork. This importance can be continued through the policy support and technical development for the continuation and preservation of traditional Sambe production. With this, the value of Sambe can be newly recognized and the way of inheriting and development of tradition can be found
