Abstract
This article explores the letter opening of Romans to examine its characteristics and function. Jeffrey A. D. Weima’s previous works on the letter opening of Romans are taken as starting point. The letter opening of Romans consists of a sender formula, a recipient formula and a greeting formula just as the other Paul’s letters do. However, the sender formula is expanded into seven verses. The co-sender is omitted unlike other Paul’s letters which usually include Timothy as co-sender. Three titles are employed to identify the sender. The explanation of Paul’s gospel is placed between the sender formula and the recipient formula. The Early church’s confessional materials are likely adopted to express Paul’s faith and gospel. Paul’s emphasis on his apostleship for the Gentiles is observed as well. Recipients are included within the boundary of Paul’s Gentile mission. The above characteristics observed in the letter opening of Romans represent the relationship between Paul and Roman believers. Paul has neither established nor visited the Roman church. Therefore, Paul, the sender of Romans, efforts to introduce himself to Romans as a trustworthy apostle who was called by God and Christ for Gentile mission in which Roman Christians are included. He also tries to present his gospel as the same one as the Roman believers have already received. Romans' letter opening is thoughtfully composed to make the recipient hear the sender’s message without hesitation.
