Abstract
This article commences with the two important questions revolving around Vexata Quaestio of Romans: One is “why did Paul write this letter to the Roman church he had not founded nor visited before?”; the other is “why did Paul use quotations from Old Testament more significantly and fre- quently in this letter than in his other letters?”First of all, it is clear that epistolary analysis can grant important hints at Paul’s overall purpose in writing this letter. Substantiating such an overall purpose in the letter body, secondly, Paul appears to have established an outstanding literary texture comprising rhetorical questions and corresponding quotations. In other words, Paul’s use of quotations from Old Testament should be credited as one of the two pillars of the literary texture. Hence it gives rise to con- ducting a scientific approach to Paul’s use of quotations from Old Testament. Along with these important observations, it is worth noting that Paul’s use of Habakkuk 2:4 in Rom 1:7 acts as a hermeneutical key to managing our observations on both epistolary framework and the literary texture in a holistic manner. Granted that, in this article we will delve into two important questions - “what is the gospel Paul has commissioned to proclaim?” and “what does Paul’s gospel intend to do?” - which Paul was adamant to proclaim to the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic Roman church.
