한국 ‘웰빙’ 문화에 나타난 뉴에이지 운동의전일주의에 관한 일 고찰

초록

본 연구는 뉴에이지 운동의 전일주의의 의미와 이것이 한국 웰빙 문화에 구현된 양상과 특성을 규명하기 위해 시도된 것이다. 특히 전일주의가 대상이 된 것은 이것이 현재 한국 대중문화의 중요한 부분인 웰빙에 대한 관심과 직결되고 있다는 점을 주목한 것이지만, 무엇보다 뉴에이지 사상을 형성하는 기반인 형이상학적 전통이 바로 전일주의의 중심배경이라는 점에 근거한다. 웰빙이란 건강을 최우선으로 하여 삶의 질을 추구한다는 의미를 지니는 바, 현재 웰빙은 다수 대중이 지향하는 보편적인 삶의 목표가 되고 있어 이미 한국 대중문화의 이 중요 부분을 차지하고 있다는 점에서 한국 웰빙 문화는 무엇보다 개인의 건강에 초점을 두고 있음이 드러난다. 이 점은 뉴에이지 전일주의의 변질로 이해되거니와, 인간과 자연과 우주 사이에 소통하는 영적 에너지의 존재를 상정하6 한국 ‘웰빙’ 문화에 나타난 뉴에이지 운동의 전일주의에 관한 일 고찰면서 인간의 몸과 마음과 영혼이 하나일 뿐 아니라 인간과 우주가 궁극적으로는 하나라는 일체성에서 출발한 그 이론적 기반이 한 개인의 문제로 그 대상이 심하게 위축된 것이다. 개인의 건강 위주의 웰빙은 몸의 건강과 함께 영적 치유에 초점을 두는 뉴에이지 전일주의의 개념이 단순히 질병 치료라는 전일의학적 성격으로 변모하고 있음을 보여주는 것이기도 하다. 그간 뉴에이지의 개념 정의는 주로 기성종교의 관점에서 이루어졌으나 오히려 전일주의를 중심으로 접근할 경우 그 본질과 특성이 보다 더 분명하게 드러날 수 있다는 점도 확인된다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper lies in studying the nature of holism of New Age Movement and its characteristics and meanings permeated in Korean popular culture. Holism is an important theme in new age studies in that it is not only directly connected with 'well-being' in Korean popular culture, but also closely identified with the ocult tradition which has been considered as precursors of the New Age Movement. Well-being which means seking out of a better quality of life through physical, mental and emotional health, now occupies the central place of Korean popular culture, as the majority of people regard it as an ultimate goal of life. Truth is that, however, Korean wellbeing culture focuses upon only personal or individual health, puting emphasis on meditation training and health food. These characteristics are understood to show some transformations of new age holism: the one is that the wholeness between body and mind, human and the earth, was reduced to personal matters neglecting the aim for healing society and nature; the other is that wellbeing focusing upon individual health changed the nature of new age holism from emphasis of the individual spiritual self-awakening toward meaning of the holistic medical treatment concerned about the cure of illness. The definition of New Age Movement has often been attempted around spirituality from Christian perspectives, but it should be noted that it could rather be better and more clearly defined through holism which allows us to characterize the central core and demarcation of the Movement.
