Abstract
The solidity about building a castle is very important. Seoul castle as a capital was well made. When building the cheseong(體城), The name of gamyeokgwan(監役官) was carved on jangseok(墻石) of yeojang(女墻) or myeonseok(面石). If the castle collapsed, it was repaired by the related gamyeokgwan and he sat in judgement. So gakjaseongseok(刻字城石) was source material to punish gamyeokgwan for their diligence and negligence. And the solidity was related to diligence of craftsmans, so stonemason's name was carved. 84 gakjaseongseoks(刻字城石) were investigated this time. There are Taejo(太祖) period 18 pieces, Sejong(世宗) period 33 pieces, Hyojong(孝宗) period 1 piece, Sukjong(肅宗) period 5 pieces, Jeongjo(正祖) period 1 piece, Sunjo(純祖) period 17 pieces, Cheoljong(哲宗) period 1 piece, and unknown period 8 pieces. Among this, Sejong(世宗) period is 39 percent and Taejo(太祖) period is 21 percent. Investigated jahomyeonggakjaseongseok(字號銘刻字城石) of Taejo(太祖) period was all Gyeongsangdo local's pieces, exclusive of Jeonlado's naejamyeonggakjaseongseok(柰字銘刻字城石). As naejamyeonggakjaseongseok was checked, we could know that the boundary between Gyeongsangdo and Jeonlado is the east site of Seoul tower. Some people doubt that making age of the Sejong period epigraph related to building the castle is correct. As gakjaseongseoks that Haejin(海珎), Sunheung(順興) and Gicheon(基川) were carved on them were checked, this doubt will be solved. According to pyeongtaekmyeonggakjaseongseok(平澤銘刻字城石) and dongbokmyeonggakjaseongseok (同福銘刻字城石), we could know that the building boundary between Chungchyengdo and Jeonlado is a site between Naksan(駱山) and Heuinmun(興仁門). According to haejinmyeonggakjaseongseok(海珎銘刻字城石) and Hamanmyeonggakjaseongseok(咸安銘刻字城石), we could know that the building boundary between Gyeongsangdo and Jeonlado is the vicinity of Janchung gymnasium. Seoul castle was extensively rebuilt in Sukjong period, but epigraph related to building the castle is few. Sojeonseongo(小田省吾) introduced source materials of 12 sites to public, but few sites remain now. The yeojang that was made between Jeongjo period and Cheoljong period used the trimed jangseok like myeonseok of cheseong. The okgaeseok and gwiokgaeseok were trimed well. The part of Seoul castle that was built with bricks in Yeongjo(英祖) period repaired like this.
