Abstract
This study analyzed the relationship between urban density and commuting, which is measured by time and distance. Spatial panel models were applied to the analysis of the relationship between commuting time and distance for understanding the relationship between urban density and commuting using the data of SMA (Seoul Metopolitan Areas) commuting for the year from 2002 through 2016. It is notable that the relationship between commuting time and distance have the “reverse U” function. This relation indicates that when commuting distance increases, commuting time increases and then decreases because of the improvement of commuting speed. The result of the relationship between urban density and commuting that as follows. First, the relationship between population density and commuting time had the “reverse U” function while the relationship between employment density and commuting time had the “U” function. In the commuting distance model, only employment density affected commuting distance with the negative effect. Second, land use factors in an area were important variables affecting commuting time in adjacent areas while commuting mode factors were important variables affecting commuting distance in adjacent areas. Therefore, in order to reduce commuting time and distance, the policies are needed such as supplying jobs in housing rich areas and supplying housing in job rich areas. In addition, new transportation system and new road construction such as highway are needed for reducing traffic congestion and longer commuting time.
