최근 출간되고 있는 서울시 관련 역사는 문화와 인문지리에 집중되어 있다. 이러한 경향은 서울 시민들의 요구와 삶의 질을 높이기 위해서 중요한 연구라고 할 수 있지만, 다른 한편으로 현대사에서 서울시의 모습을 보여주기 위한 행정기구 및 서울시의 정책에 대한 보다 치밀한 분석이 부재한 상황이다. 이는 자료가 없거나 제대로 정리되지 않기 때문에 나타나는 것이기도 하며, 다른 한편으로는 연구자들의 무관심 때문이기도 하다. 자료가 없다면 새롭게 수집해야 한다. 해외의 시사 편찬 관련 기관들도 기존 자료 외에 새로운 자료 수집을 위한 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이를 위한 아키비스트들의 고용도 필요하다. 새로운 자료들을 바탕으로 해서 행정 분야뿐만 아니라 수자원이나 환경, 산업과 상업 등 시민들의 실행활과 밀접히 연결되는 현대의 역사를 복원할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 자료의 수집과 연구는 서울시에서 발생하는 다양한 사건, 사고의 원인을 규명하고 책임을 묻기 위해서도 필요하다. 현대사 시기에 서울은 급격한 변화를 경험했고, 그 과정에서 많은 사건들이 발생하기도 했다. 이러한 다이나믹한 서울의 모습을 밝히는 것이 서울시민의 삶의 질을 제고하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것이다.
Abstract
A Proposal for Vitalization of Research on Modern History of Seoul and Applying Raw Materials Park, Tae-gyun There are diverse kinds of books on Seoul which focus on the culture and environment. Although these trends are very important to improve quality of Seoul citizen’s life, it would not be difficult to find that there are very few works on modern history of Seoul, in particular about administration, policy, structural changes, and so on. It is mainly because of lack of raw materials. Moreover, there are few researchers who are interested in those issues in Seoul. In order to encourage new research, to collect as well as to find and arrange sources should be needed, while experts and archivists must be hired and trained. New works on water, industry, commerce, etc. could be possible by using those sources, as we can see diverse international cases. At the same time, to collect sources and to encourage new research would be closely connected with analysis on the diverse issues and incidents. Citizens in Seoul experienced a lot of changes and accidents which threatened people’s security. To exhume dynamics of Seoul would be very helpful to improve quality of citizen’s life in Seoul now and in the future.
