Abstract
This study basically aims to investigate the pedestrian behavior to apply it to the pedestrian simulation models, which highlight evacuees behavior patterns during a catastrophe. For this purpose of the study, observed human walking behaviors were categorized into: Intellectual Walking based on acknowledged facts; and Instinctual Walking based on intuition or perception. Intellectual Walking is observed during normal condition. It was characterized as either of (1) Automatic Walking based on habits; or (2) Intelligent Walking based on efficiency. Instinctual Walking is observed during emergency condition when people are in panic. It is characterized as (1) Fast and Straight Walking based on adrenaline response; (2) Frozen Walking based on immobility impeded by certain restrictions; or (3) Tizzy Walking based on fear and reluctance. Patterns of human walking behavior under normal condition is revealed by collecting trajectory data from video clips. It also assumed that, at least, there are similarities in escaping behavior of human and animal, alike, in disaster situations. The result of this investigation will serve as a useful tool in planning evacuation strategies that accommodate susceptible panic behavior in time of emergency.
