Abstract
Bukhansan Fortress was constructed as a defensive facility intended to replace Ganghwa Island and Namhansan Fortress, built with the active support of King Sukjong. After experiencing a rebellion, King Yeongjo determined it necessary to fortify Bukhansan Fortress to defend the capital and strengthen Tangchundae, which connected the capital to Bukhansan Fortress. To realize this, he visited Tangchundae and Bukhansan Fortress four times. These visits provided an opportunity to demonstrate the king's resolve to protect the capital to his people and to encourage the soldiers. Moreover, they served as occasions to pressure military leaders to expedite the construction of the fortress and allowed the king to inspect the area personally. For King Yeongjo, Bukhansan Fortress was both a place of memories shared with King Sukjong and a site for implementing King Sukjong's policies, as well as a location where he projected his expectations for his successor, later King Jeongjo, to continue. Additionally, Bukhansan Fortress was frequently mentioned as a place where King Yeongjo could reside when leaving the palace, especially when expressing his refusal of honorific titles. In essence, for King Yeongjo, Bukhansan Fortress was a military stronghold near the capital that gained new value as he pursued his capital defense policy. It was also a symbolic place for remembering and continuing King Sukjong's legacy, and a political space for expressing his will to refuse honorific titles.
