Abstract

This study examines the long-term dynamic equilibrium between supply and demand from multi-modal perspective in the Korean market through Granger causality testing and Random Forest methodology. Analyzing supply-demand indicators for road, rail, and air passenger markets over an almost three-decade period reveals that short-term equilibrium relationships evolve into mutual causal relationships over extended time frames. The research investigates both exogenous and endogenous factors influencing transportation market dynamics, confirming the explanatory power of supply variables on demand alongside socioeconomic indicators. Findings demonstrate that transportation service supply significantly impacts demand patterns, while multiple factors can influence both supply and demand simultaneously—exemplified by road network expansion effects on airline demand in Korea. The supply-demand interrelationships vary according to analytical time frames, with observed time lags or persistent effects ranging from one to five years. Random Forest modeling indicates that road passenger demand is primarily driven by economic and demographic variables, whereas rail and air passenger demand is predominantly influenced by seat capacity and service frequency. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of long-term transportation market trends and provides valuable insights for transportation policy formulation in the context of evolving mobility paradigms.
