The aim of this paper is to propose an interpretation, from renewed angles, of the the Samcheok dialect of Gangwon‐do in Korean, and also to provide a comprehensive analysis of previous literature on it based on the author's research. These goals are summarized as follows:1. A phonological interpretation of the accentual system and compound nouns of the Samcheok dialect is presented. In the four‐pattern accent system proposed in this paper, only four oppositions exist irrespective of the length of the accentual units. 2. From the accent of the compound noun, we can predict the accent of the first element, but not that of the second element.
