Abstract
During the modern period, Japanese language textbooks functioned not only as language learning tools but also as vehicles for spreading modern knowledge, culture, and ideologies. They covered topics like politics, economy, and military affairs, aiming to promote patriotism and awareness of international issues. The Residency-General imposed strict censorship, as seen in the approval of The Complete Japanese Language and the banning of A Self-Study Guide to Proper Japanese, both by the same author. This reflects how textbook content was controlled for both language and ideological messages. The textbook screening system enabled the Japanese government to regulate the values and information conveyed through education. As a result, Japanese textbooks of the Enlightenment period reveal not only trends in language education but also the political strategies behind colonial educational policy.
