Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ perceptions and attitudes toward the use of generative AI in Japanese language learning and to explore its educational applications. To this end, a survey was administered to students enrolled in both Japanese language liberal arts courses and Japanese language and literature major courses at S University. A total of 245 students participated, and the questionnaire comprised 24 items with a reliability coefficient (Cronbach’s α) of .745. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, chi-square tests (χ²), independent samples t-tests, and multiple response analysis. The findings are as follows. First, students reported using generative AI only when necessary, primarily utilizing conversational AI for assignments and learning tasks. Japanese language majors exhibited lower levels of trust in the answers provided by generative AI and reported less frequent usage compared to non-majors. Second, in terms of using generative AI as a language learning tool, majors generally evaluated its contribution to learning positively. In contrast, non-majors either did not use generative AI for Japanese language learning or used it only at a basic level. Third, majors demonstrated a higher level of ethical awareness regarding the use of generative AI. Across all participants, concerns were raised about the inaccuracy of information generated by AI and the potential for overreliance on such tools.
