Abstract
This study examines phonetic and phonological features that distinguish gender in traditional Japanese and Kirakira names, focusing on the mora count and consonant distribution. Data from the Meiji Yasuda Top 50 Read Names and Kirakira names were subjected to statistical analysis. The findings indicate that male names generally use 4 or 5 morae, while female names favor 2 or 3 morae, with 2 morae being more closely linked to femininity. Kirakira names tend to exhibit more gender neutrality compared to traditional names. In terms of consonant distribution, obstruents are more commonly used in male names, while sonorants are prevalent in female names. However, the use of voiced obstruents differs between groups: Kirakira names use them more frequently in male names, whereas in the Meiji Yasuda list, they appear more often in female names. This shift reflects a broader trend in the Meiji Yasuda data, where female names have seen a decline in sonorants and an increase in obstruents over time. Group-specific patterns indicate that male Kirakira names tend to exhibit a more feminine or neutral character due to the increased presence of sonorants, while male names in the Meiji Yasuda group are characterized by a more pronounced masculinity through the heavier use of obstruents. In contrast, female Kirakira names are strongly characterized by a predominance of sonorants, reinforcing a distinctly feminine quality. On the other hand, female names in the Meiji Yasuda group incorporate more voiced and voiceless obstruents, contributing to a relatively neutral gender expression.
