Abstract

This study quantitatively analyzes the linguistic characteristics of Japanese newspaper editorials using natural language processing techniques. The research corpus consists of 3,843 editorials from the Yomiuri Shimbun published from December 2018 to July 2024. Analysis of part-of-speech sequences reveals a predominance of noun- centered structures, with noun-particle (18.62%) and noun-noun (9.34%) combinations being the most frequent 2-gram patterns. This reflects the editorial’s emphasis on delivering concise and factual information. The 3-gram analysis further demonstrates the complexity of grammatical structures, highlighting the logical argumentation style typical of editorials. Examination of sentence-final expressions reveals systematic rhetorical strategies. The frequent use of obligation forms and assertive forms indicates the editorial's persuasive intent and authoritative stance. TF-IDF analysis of key vocabulary across different thematic areas reveals topic-specific lexical preferences. Words such as ‘政府’ (government) and ‘首相’ (prime minister) are highly significant in political discourse, while ‘企業’ (company) and ‘経済’ (economy) dominate economic discussions. The study also finds a notable structural uniformity in sentence length, with 50% of the editorials centering around 617 characters. This consistency is interpreted as a deliberate stylistic choice to enhance readability and maintain genre-specific authority. In conclusion, this research provides empirical evidence for the sophisticated linguistic strategies employed in Japanese newspaper editorials, contributing to a deeper understanding of the genre's rhetorical structure and discursive practices.
