Abstract

This study categorizes and analyzes the various modes of expression related to "aging(老い)" as depicted in waka(和歌), a form of classical Japanese poetry. Focusing on major poetry anthologies from the Jōdai(上代) and Chūko(中古) periods of classical Japanese literature—such as Man’yōshū, Kokin Wakashū, Ise Monogatari, Yamato Monogatari, and Heichū Monogatari—this paper explores the meanings of "aging" embedded in their waka compositions. The first type of aging expressed in classical Japanese poetry reflects a social perception of old age commonly shared by people of the time. In these waka, the one-way progression of human aging is often contrasted with the unchanging cycles of nature, thereby highlighting the finitude of human time. The second type deals with personal experiences of physical deterioration and social marginalization in old age. While the first type allows for indirect reflection on aging even by those who have not yet experienced it, the second is grounded in the speaker's direct, lived reality. As such, it presents a candid view of the realities of aging and old age in ancient Japan. The third type does not depict aging as a biological process but instead employs it as a poetic device to accentuate emotional states. Here, "aging" functions as a literary tool to underscore the urgency of limited time and the preciousness of the present moment. It amplifies feelings such as love or joy by invoking the notion of aging as a contrastive, intensifying element. Although waka expressing aging often portray the pain of physical decline and even lament it, they are not limited to negative interpretations. By examining how ancient Japanese poets perceived and internalized aging through waka, this study proposes new possibilities for understanding and appreciating the multifaceted perspectives on old age.
