Abstract

This paper makes a modest attempt to analyze the impact of structural changes of Indian industry and communal conflicts, focusing on the textile industry in Gujarat. A significant component of this analysis is that why and how were there different aspects of communal conflicts in Ahmedabad and in Surat within the state of Gujarat. The investigation reveals that due to the decline of mills in Ahmedabad there were serious Hindu-Muslim conflicts, but in Surat there were comparably minor conflicts due to growth both in the area of powerlooms and handlooms as a decentralized sector under active support of the Union Government and the State Government. It is found that there is close relations between the structural changes of textile industry and communal conflicts in Gujarat. In this regard, it is suggested that for preventing the communal violence like '2002 Gujarat Carnage' the Government of India in general and the Government of Gujarat in particular should gradually reform and take a modernization process the textile sector in human face, when far reaching changes takes place in the industry in the era of liberalization and globalization.
