Abstract

The purport of this essay consists in helping the practitioners to understand Buddha's way to liberation and the vipassanā meditation that he developed. For this purpose the latter is investigated in the light of early Sāṁkhya. As a result of the historical survey conducted in order to draw out the form of Sāṁkhya that Buddha might have come in touch with, the research is to be mainly focused on the form of Sāṁkhya existed between 7C and 4C B.C. In Chapter 2 the following aspects common to both the early Sāṁkhya philosophy and Buddha's doctrines are dealt with: making an approach to the realm of the Absolute starting from the realm of the material phenomenal world, making an analysis of the material world in terms of 25 principles or 5 khandhas, and pursuing the truth or wisdom in the way to the liberation from suffering. In chapter 3 in dealing with the Buddhistic doctrine of 3 feelings (vedanās) in the light of the significance of equilibrium of the three guṇas(triguṇas) it is stressed that the mindfulness (sati) practice of neither pleasant nor unpleasant feeling which is also called upekkhā should be advanced to the state of equanimity (upekkhā). Furthermore, The relationship between the knowing mind and the consciousness (viññāna) is interpreted as non-dual and the dualism of eary Sāṁkhya philosophy is critically reinterpreted in that light. The Buddhistic doctrine of consciousness (viññāna) that is the watching mind is reinterpreted in the light of the doctrine of Puruṣa as Witness (sākṣīn). The Kaivalya of the watching mind that is possible on the basis of the non-dual relation between the knowing mind and the watching mind is reinterpreted as the transcendence ascribable to the function of the knowing mind. In the concluding remarks I bring out the following points: Human beings experience only the spectrum of psycho-physical energy and the dualism of mind and matter is merely conception pertaining to the two extremes of the unitary spectrum and the latter is something beyond such a conceptual discrimination. Lastly, in view of the fact that the Sāṁkhya philosophy in form of Sāṁkhya-Yoga having separated from the traditional Yoga became gradually more and more analytical and logical and eventually faded out in the history of Indian philosophy, the personal experience (anubhava) through the meditation practice is emphasized as necessary for the philosophical studies.
