Abstract
India is the country that has universally pursued the corporate social responsibility activities based on religious belief, even before the period of economic development. This paper studies the India's changing trends in corporate social responsibility activities and emphasized methodologies, investigates the companies conducting various activities of corporate social responsibilities, and provides lessons for the companies doing businesses in India. In the history of social responsibilities, the pre-1850s era was characterized as the donations from the view of philanthropy. Prior to the early industrialization had been considered small and limited activities based on corporate profits. Society developing activities had been valued in the independence movement period affected by the Gandhi’s belief on trusteeship and has transformed afterwards into one of the sustainable strategies. Companies pursuing social responsibility activities consider coexistence with local communities as normal. Developing local communities is on the top of priority list and various activities have been carried in diverse fields, such as health-care and education services and environment protection. For foreign companies, joint programs with local governments or NGO's are more effective than independent actions. Moreover, differentiated activities of social responsibility reflecting company’s characteristics must be developed to enhance the corporate images and business performances.
