Abstract
With its vast territory and huge population, India is regarded as a prospective market with great potential by global business standards. However, India has serious supply problem of living water due mainly to the rapid increase of population and urbanization in recent times. Therefore, it is reasonable to predict that securing a stable supply of clean living water will be crucial for the next few decades. At the same time, the size of middle and mid-high classes of people in terms of economic power has increased sharply since the implementation of new economic policies in 1991, and it resulted in the improvement of living standards, health awareness and the increase of purchasing power among these groups. Even though the demand for water purifier products continues to increase, the penetration rate remains at just 4.8% in 2012, far below the overall economic growth rate. Therefore, it is very much necessary to consider an immediate entry into the Indian water purifier products market to occupy an advantageous position. This study tries to find the main motivation and decision factors that the Healthcare Division, LG Electronics Co. conducted in penetrating the Indian market and the key elements of respective steps for significant strategy of market approach through case studies. To carry out this, specifically, this study analyzed go-to-market strategy and success factor for Indian water purifier business by LG Electronics based on the decision factors by Dunning and Root for overseas penetration, differentiation, and localization strategy. To be concrete, the motive in entering Indian market by LG Electronics is potential attractiveness, meanwhile under the intensive price competition in the domestic water purifier products market. Among the global market, local country market cause is the decision factor to enter Indian market, which is huge market size, strong clean living water potential demand and advanced retentive technology level than local brand. And the other is enterprise cause and product categories, which is globalization experience, leader’s business will, LG Electronics owned brand shop and direct service network. Consequently, Indian market means the unique position of advantage for LG Electronics. Thus, LG Electronics strongly carry forward a strategy through differentiated premium positioning and needs based localization, for the benefit of water purifier outstanding performance. Meanwhile lack of study on the overall analysis about various factors and strategies in entering Indian market, this study is meaningful to provide prerequisite items that domestic companies should be prepared prior to entering Indian market and a practical implication for strengthening the capacity.
