Abstract

This study examines the historical significance of the New York Photo League, which was active from 1936 to 1951. It aims to capture a series of photographic transformations that occurred in the gap between the establishment of the concept of documentary photography from an activist perspective and the emergence of documentary photography from an individual perspective through the activities of the New York Photo League, which functioned as a hub of the international photographic network of the time. To this end, this study will examine how the social practice of the Photo League came to relate to the personal perspective documentary projects that emerged from young photographers in New York in the 1950s through an analysis of the distinctive platform structure of the Photo League's network of photographers that was established during its founding and stabilization, and the vision of photographic education of its co-founder Sid Grossman, which was the driving force behind the open exchange of discourse that continued throughout the organization's existence.
