Abstract
In the present study, we developed the art appreciation scale to understand the motivations for art appreciation of general population and investigated the relationship between the art appreciation motivations and appreciators’ individual differences. For the art appreciation scale, 10 items of art appreciation motivations were created based on the preliminary open responses by the appreciators from the museum. Exploratory factor analysis revealed 4 factors with 8 items of the art appreciation scale and their reliability was tested. The art appreciation motivations consist of artistic, emotional, educational and social motivations. Personality and art experience variables were tested to examine the relationship between the art appreciation motivations and appreciators’ characteristics. Both personality and art experience significantly predicted art appreciation and the strongest predictors were openness and art knowledge. For the specific factor of the art appreciation, personality best predicted the artistic motivation whereas art knowledge best predicted the educational motivation. Current findings will provide scientific support for the services of art exhibitions or education that better understand appreciators’ perspectives.
