Abstract
This study explores the polysemy of the English verb pick through the Functional Pivot Approach proposed by Kim (2022, 2024). Grounded in the functions of a bird’s beak, four functional pivots—i) pecking, ii) plucking, iii) inserting, and iv) probing and taking out—are proposed as conceptual cores that organize the various senses of pick. These senses are classified into the four clusters, and a semantic network is constructed to illustrate their interrelationships. The analysis demonstrates that the Functional Pivot Approach offers a systematic framework for accounting for the multiple meanings of pick. Although originally developed for the analysis of prepositions, the approach proves applicable to verb polysemy as well. The study highlights its potential for broader application in semantic analysis, particularly in the domain of verb meaning.
